Dinner at a nearby Restaurant
The Grain Store, Victoria Street
"...Edinburgh has many Scottish-French hybrid restaurants, but this is definitely one of the more successful ones. Take one of the window tables in this romantic candle-lit restaurant and observe the bustling, cobbled Victoria Street below. Starters are typically seafood dishes or salads. For your main course expect a wide choice including game, beef, fish and veggie options. A visit to this revered eatery is a journey into a world of beautifully prepared and presented cuisine, with an alluring backdrop." WGUIDES
"....The inclusive dinner menu is cracking value; the wine list covers all bases from sensible to decadent. One of Edinburgh's genuine gems." THE SCOTSMAN

The Haggis is piped in, ceremoniously "addressed" in the manner of Burns, and presented to the Host who enjoys a dram with the Piper and Chef. After dinner the Hopetoun House Dancers perform traditional Highland and Scottish country dancing and encourage the guests to join in. The evening ends with the traditional end to a party in Scotland - the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
Oxenfoord Castle
Oxenfoord Castle is a unique location, with the benefit of being yours exclusively from the moment you arrive until you leave. Beautifully situated in the midst of glorious park and woodland, the Castle is located just 12 miles from Edinburgh.
The original core of the castle is the old tower of the MacGills, and was inherited by Lady Dalrymple in 1779. A year later, Sir John Dalrymple commissioned Robert Adam to enlarge the tower in his 'Castle Style' with corner turrets and intermediate bow windows mainly in three stories.
The interior of the principle floor boasts a Library and Drawing Room on the south side of the "most magnificence" and a Dining Room to the west with carved woodwork dating from 1750 and an ornate Robert Adam ceiling.
A traditional Scottish evening along the lines already described for Hopetoun House above can be prepared or an alternative programme offered according to your wishes and budget. To finish the evening a full "Beating of Retreat" with Pipes and Drums can be arranged in the grounds in front of the Castle.
Our Opinion
Both these "lived in" homes have the benefit of being able to dine your 100 guests inside, within one of their historic rooms, as opposed to a marquee in the grounds and are conveniently located within 30-40 minutes drive by coach from the centre of Edinburgh. Both are splendid venues although, as the name implies, Oxenfoord better meets your desire for a castle, Hopetoun House being more of a stately home. In our opinion also, we believe Oxenfoord offers slightly better value for money.
