Lufthansa relaunches Germanwings as budget brand

Germanwings logoLufthansa has officially relaunched Germanwings as its new low-cost brand.

Germanwings has taken over all of Lufthansa’s short-haul services away from the main hubs of Frankfurt and Munich. This includes major German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn.

Passengers flying on Germanwings are being offered three categories of tickets:

  • Best - offers a seat in one of the first three rows with an empty middle seat which is separated from the rest of the aircraft by a screen. The fare also allows the passenger access to Lufthansa’s airport lounges, use priority check-in and lanes for passage through the airport, à la carte meals on board, check two bags, frequent flyer miles and the ability to change and cancel bookings.
  • Smart - offers extra services such as assigned seating in the same section as Best customers, plus snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a 23 kg luggage allowance
  • Basic - a traditional no-frills fare with entitlement to a seat after row 11 but no free catering or checked baggage
