Christchurch Earthquake and Volcanic Ash Travel Disruption

 13 Jun 2011

Air New Zealand Operational Guidelines

Christchurch Earthquake - 13 June 10:00am

Some flights were cancelled into and out of Christchurch while the airport terminal and the runway checked by engineers following the earthquake in Christchurch overnight. It later reopened and we have been doing our best to move people in and out of the city. Air New Zealand have arranged additional flights and upgauged aircraft as follows:

  • Auckland Christchurch operated by a 133 seat Boeing 737-300
  • Wellington Christchurch operated by a 171 seat Airbus A320
  • Auckland Christchurch operated by a 171 seat Airbus A320
  • Christchurch Auckland operated by a 171 seat Airbus A320

The following flexibility will be permitted on all fare types for passengers ticketed prior to Monday 13 June for travel to/from Christchurch up to and including Friday 17 June.

This information relates specifically to tickets issued on Air New Zealand 086 ticket stock and covers both domestic and international travel.

Options are as follows:

  • Passengers ticketed for travel to and from Christchurch prior to and including Friday 17 June may defer their travel to a later Air New Zealand flight in the same booking class inside 12-months of the original date of travel without penalty. If only higher booking classes are available, the fare differential will apply. If the proposed date of travel is unknown, then the value of the ticket may be held in credit for payment towards travel within the same 12-month validity.
  • Passengers ticketed to travel to Christchurch prior to and including Friday 17 June may change their travel to another Air New Zealand destination without penalty. In this instance any applicable fare differential will apply.
  • Passengers who are ticketed and wish to bring their travel to/from Christchurch forward to a date on/prior to Friday 17 June do so in the same cabin (regardless of booking class) without penalty and fare difference. If a cabin upgrade is required the fare differential will apply.

Volcanic Ash Travel Policy - 13 June 10:00am

Air New Zealand advises that no delays are currently expected to their domestic and International services as a result of the volcanic ash. However, as a result of some passengers’ travel plans being affected by other carriers Air New Zealand have issued the below guidelines to assist any passengers needing to amend travel throughout this period.

For flights issued on same ticket:

  • Passengers must cancel the originally confirmed Air NZ travel as early as possible prior to departure.
  • The ticket may be changed to connect with the other airline’s revised schedule without penalty or additional collection

For separately issued tickets:

  • Passengers must cancel the originally confirmed Air NZ travel as early as possible prior to departure.
  • The ticket may be changed without penalty. In this instance any applicable fare differential will apply.
  • Changes can also be made on the day of travel where fare rules otherwise preclude this
  • The value of the fare may be held in credit (until the 30th June 2011) in the event the other airline has not resumed travel and therefore the new international flight is unknown.
